How the time zone converter works

The converter treats your source time as a local time in the selected source zone, converts it to a UTC instant, then displays that same instant in the destination time zone.

Source local date and time → UTC instant → Destination local date and time

This matters because the converted date may be the previous day, the same day or the next day depending on the offset between the two zones.

GMT, BST and daylight saving

For UK times, London is not always the same as UTC. In winter the UK uses GMT. In summer the UK usually uses British Summer Time, which is one hour ahead of GMT.

The calculator uses the selected date when converting, so a London time in June may convert differently from a London time in December.

Tip: when arranging meetings, always convert the actual meeting date rather than using a rough “UK is five hours ahead” shortcut.

Time zone converter FAQs

Why does the converted date sometimes change?

When the destination time zone is many hours ahead or behind the source time zone, the converted time can land on the previous or next calendar date.

Is London always the same as UTC?

No. London is usually on GMT in winter and BST in summer. Use the actual date when converting a time.

Can I use this for meetings?

Yes, for common meeting planning. For legal, travel or critical deadline use, check the official event, airline, employer or platform time as well.
